During your initial or routine exam, we will evaluate you for gingivitis (gum disease) or periodontitis (gum and bone disease). Patients that have a healthy tissue will get their cleanings (prophylaxis) every six months. Patients that have gingivitis or periodontitis are at risk of developing infections that can spread to the rest of the body, and can also lose their teeth. Such patients require a more frequent and proactive approach in order to control the disease. Scaling and root planning (deep cleaning) is recommended for these patients in order to remove the bacteria causing the disease, and periodontal maintenance will follow every 3-4 months.
